The main focus of my research is biotic interactions between plants. I am particularly interested in the role of root exudates and soil microbes in mediating plant-plant interactions and in establishing how the nature of interactions is affected by the evolutionary history of the species involved. My research has included studies of individual plants from single species; multiple plant species, with the aim of explaining interspecific variation in plant responses to abiotic and biotic factors; and entire plant communities. I am currently working towards incorporating an ecosystem perspective in my research. The ultimate goals of my work are to better understand how plant communities and ecosystems function and adapt to their abiotic and biotic components and to improve the management of natural and agricultural systems in the face of global change.
